Field Scholarship (now accepting applications)

Here at TravelingGeologist, we understand the importance of fieldwork as part of a well-rounded geologic education. While some departments are removing field camps from their curriculum and limiting fieldwork experiences due to the added expense and health and safety concerns, we are seeking ways to expand the fieldwork opportunities for students in need.

Importantly, one size does not fit all when it comes to exploring the field. Fieldwork requirements can be largely inaccessible to differently-abled populations and have posed real and serious risks to the safety of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ students. We believe these barriers should not compromise the education, comfort, and safety of students seeking field-based opportunities.

To this end, we have formed the TravelingGeologist Field Work Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide funding for students in need (whether related to financial, accessibility, or safety issues) to support meaningful and enriching experiences in the field. Our inaugural round of scholarships has been made possible through the proceeds of our TG merch and generous donations. If you would like to contribute to the fieldwork scholarship, you can purchase some TG merch (here) where all profits go to the scholarship fund or you can contact scholarships@travelinggeologist.com for information on how to donate.

Stay tuned for 2023 applications! (Due 31 March 2023)

We are now accepting applications for our inaugural field scholarship. The TravelingGeologist Fieldwork Scholarship carries an award of 800CAD (or equivalent foreign currency). The scholarship is intended to support all travel, meals, lodging and ancillary materials for the student and specifically related to fieldwork expenses. Recipients are expected to seek other sources of funding for all additional research expenses. The receipient will be expected to satisfy the terms and conditions of the award. To apply please email the scholarship form to scholarships@travelinggeologist.com prior to 31 March 2023. You can download the scholarship form below.

Unconformity Scholarship

We are excited to collaborate with the film Unconformity to offer scholarships to students in the geosciences to support field work. Unconformity is a new movie about a sedimentologist graduate student whose fieldwork in the Nevada high desert leads to discoveries and conflict with her advisor. The film touches on important issues like sexism in academia, plagiarism, extinction events, and land rights, and we are hosting screenings at educational institutions, which will be accompanied by discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia (and particularly the geosciences). Half of the proceeds from the screenings will go to funding this scholarship, which will support students from underrepresented groups in the geosciences—people who are BIPOC, women, or from low income backgrounds.

Stay tuned for details on how to apply.

If you are interested in learning more or hosting a screening, email info@geologymovie.com.
